Faculty of Science renamed Faculty of Science and Technology to reflect its evolving positioning and strengths

Starting from 1 September 2026, HKBU officially renamed its Faculty of Science as the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST). To celebrate this new chapter, the University held the Renaming Ceremony for HKBU Faculty of Science and Technology on 31 August. Around 300 distinguished guests, including members of the Council and the Court, University officers, industry partners, alumni, faculty members, staff and students, gathered to witness this historic moment.

Mr Kevin Liem, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Liu Jiming, Interim Provost; Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Rick Wong, Former Dean of Science; and Professor Michael Ng, Dean of Science and Technology of HKBU jointly officiated at the light up ceremony to mark the Faculty’s new milestone.

In his welcoming remarks, Mr Kevin Liem congratulated FST and expressed his hope that it would play an even more significant role in promoting knowledge transfer and nurturing future-ready leaders equipped with transdisciplinary thinking, global perspectives and core competitiveness.  “By leveraging its strengths in innovation and technology, I am confident that the Faculty will be uniquely empowered to transform cutting-edge research into practical applications that benefit society,” he said.

Professor Alex Wai noted that FST’s development is closely intertwined with the University’s own transformation, and that the renaming is both timely and necessary. “The new name better reflects the Faculty’s evolving positioning and strengths, while fully embodying its academic breadth and social impact.  This evolution also aligns with the strategic goal to build the nation into a leading country in education, science and technology, and talent by 2035,” he said.

Professor Michael Ng said that the renaming marks a strategic step forward. “The Faculty’s new name will bring our evolving identity to the forefront, showcasing our twin pillars of excellence in both science and technology.  It also captures the true breadth of our activities, while further supporting our strategic development, attracting outstanding talent, and bolstering our overall international reputation and impact,” he said.

In addition to unveiling the Faculty’s new name, the ceremony also featured the premiere of the Faculty’s brand video which captures its future-ready mission. The award presentation for the FST Logo and Mascot Design Competition was also held, recognising the creative contributions of HKBU faculty members, students and alumni in jointly shaping the Faculty’s vibrant new image.
