Academy of Film (AF) has organised the “Love in the Time of A Quiet Earth” short mobile phone film and animation competition for the students of secondary schools, post-secondary schools and AF. The innovative contest aims to encourage students to respond creatively to the current COVID-19 outbreak and reflect on their thoughts, emotions and observations through the medium of film and animation.

The competition provides an exceptional opportunity for students to record and share their sentiments, which may be marked by anxiety and sadness intermingled with love and concern, contentment and faith. Their works will also be a valuable record of the student communities’ response to the social and public health crisis.

The competition is divided into three categories: a film category for secondary school students, a film category for AF students, and an animation category for post-secondary institutions. Secondary school and AF participants are invited to submit drama or documentary films produced on their mobile phones, while post-secondary school participants are invited to submit 2D, 3D, stop-motion, hand-drawn or motion graphic films. The subject of the films and animations should relate to COVID-19 and the maximum duration is one-minute.

The adjudicators include the AF teaching team and industry professionals. They will select three winning submissions from each category. The judging criteria will cover creativity and subject matter, production skill and presentation effects. Each winner will receive a cash prize of HK$5,000 and their films and animations will be showcased on social media and other platforms.

Entries should be submitted online on or before 4 May 2020 and the results will be announced on 18 May 2020.
