Four HKBU scholars and alumni were recognised at the recent 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards for their artistic achievements and unstinting support and contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong.
Dr Chu Siu-cheung, Senior Lecturer of the Language Centre, was named Artist of the Year (Arts Criticism), and Dr Lau Wai-shing, a part-time Lecturer of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was named Artist of the Year (Literary Arts).
Dr Austin Yip, Lecturer of the Department of Music, received the Award for Young Artist (Music), while Ms Norris Wong, a graduate of the Academy of Film’s Master of Fine Arts in Film, Television and Digital Media programme, clinched the Award for Young Artist (Film).
The judging panel said that the compilation of materials, research, critiques, proofreading, annotations, and appreciation conducted by Dr Chu have significantly bridged the gaps in research on xiqu, literature, and cultural history. Dr Lau, who is dedicated to writing and literature promotion, was praised by the panel as an all-round and accomplished artist in literature. In addition, the panel said that Dr Yip, an outstanding and active young composer, has cultivated a global vision of music, and that young filmmaker Ms Wong has shown great maturity in terms of her skills and ability to navigate the production of feature-length films.
The Awards are the flagship annual event organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and they recognise the hard work and outstanding achievements of local artists, arts organisations and groups in a variety of disciplines.
