HKBU launches Jockey Club Multiple Pathways Initiative - CLAP-TECH Pathway Project

HKBU has launched the CLAP-TECH Pathway Project (CLAP-TECH) under Jockey Club Multiple Pathways Initiative following a donation of HK$136 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. CLAP-TECH is a tripartite partnership that brings together high schools, industry and HKBU to reimagine the way that students are prepared for competitive “new collar” jobs.

The CLAP-TECH Pathway Project is overseen by a Steering Committee which formulates the strategic direction and monitors the implementation of the Project. The Project has been established to facilitate university-school-industry partnerships in the design and delivery of a through-train learning pathway that equips students with the skills and attributes that employers need now and in the future. It is led by Mr Andrew Ho, Director, and supported by a team of teaching and administrative colleagues.

CLAP-TECH is built upon IBM’s globally impactful learning model, P-TECH, which has a footprint in 28 countries. Throughout the journey, students will develop their interests, skills and competencies through an in-class curriculum and a wide range of workplace exposure activities such as mentorships, internships, company visits and projects. The Pathway begins at the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) level as Applied Learning courses, and proceeds to Higher Diploma programmes. There are currently two tracks of study focusing on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) (launched in 2020 by the School of Continuing Education) and creative media (launched in 2022 by the School of Communication and Film). Professor Ronald Chung, Dean of the School of Continuing Education, and Professor Kara Chan, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) of the School of Communication and Film, are the academic leaders of this project.

Since its inception, CLAP-TECH has engaged around 500 senior secondary students from 11 pilot schools, as well as a growing network of industry partners.
