Annual Christmas Lecture features Dr Harry Shum on AI creation

World-renowned artificial intelligence (AI) expert Dr Harry Shum, a recipient of the University’s honorary Doctor of Science degree in 2020, delivered a talk titled “A Gentle Introduction to AI Creation” at the HKBU Annual Christmas Lecture on 21 December.
The Lecture drew an audience of over 120 academics, students and alumni, as well as the honourable presence of three Presidents Emeritus of HKBU, namely Dr Daniel Tse, Professor Ng Ching-fai and Professor Roland Chin.
In the Lecture, Dr Shum talked about the latest developments in AI and deep learning, which have made AI creation an exciting cross-disciplinary research area with many practical application scenarios. He then introduced three principles of AI creation and discussed the full pipeline of the AI creation process, from creating to rendering and packing.
Dr Shum also cited examples of poems, paintings and music to explain how AI creators have learnt from human creators and their relationships, and he spoke about some of the challenges in intellectual property protection. He also shared with the audience a video of Hua Zhibing, the first virtual student in China to be powered by a deep-learning model developed by Tsinghua University, to showcase the power of AI creation and how China has been making strides in the field.
