All-round global entertainment business leaders in the making

28 Oct 2022

Accelerated by advancing technologies and increasing audience demand in recent years, the entertainment business sector in Hong Kong, mainland China and across the globe has expanded and diversified at a rapid pace. In addition to watching on traditional channels such as television and cinemas, people now enjoy films, music, theatre shows, games, and cultural events through a variety of online and offline channels, such as live streaming platforms and outdoor public event spaces. In order to engage and attract audiences, entertainment and creative industries will therefore require talents who understand technical novelties, possess a global perspective and innovative thinking, and have acquired a comprehensive scope of knowledge ranging from content development, marketing and finance to administration. The brand new Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Business Administration (Global Entertainment) (BAGE) programme offered by HKBU is precisely designed to develop students into the versatile and visionary leaders who will meet these future needs.

This transdisciplinary programme is open to applicants from all academic backgrounds. The intake quota was initially set at 15, but due to a high number of quality applications from around the world, a total of 19 local and non-local students were admitted after competitive selection. “The 2022-23 cohort is made up of students who have demonstrated passion, creativity, independent thinking and business potentials though their applications and portfolio of works,” says Dr Glos Ho, the Programme Director of BAGE. “Even though they may have individual preferences in film, music, dance, literature or other art forms, they all have a shared interest in Business Management as a profession and are motivated to go into the global entertainment business for long-term career development.”

During the programme, students will receive opportunities to explore arts and business through a cross-discipline curriculum that covers not only core courses but also experiential learning programmes and elective courses offered by HKBU’s School of Creative Arts, School of Business and Department of Humanities and Creative Writing. Among the teaching faculty are industry experts from Hong Kong and overseas who will inspire and guide students in building a comprehensive skill set, intercultural awareness and an entrepreneurial mindset.

“Students will undertake internships in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area or overseas in one of the Summer terms. There will be local and global field trips that provide first-hand exposure and industry internships to cultivate students’ professional knowledge of entertainment-focused business practices. These experiences will help students identify their career interests and personal passion,” Dr Ho adds.

With these unique transdisciplinary advantages, programme graduates will be well equipped to take up business positions in a variety of functions from administration, curation, marketing, distribution, project and event management within entertainment businesses, cultural organisations, art groups, NGOs, and the public sector.

Dr Ho is thrilled to see her students enjoying and earning an enriching spectrum of experiences on their HKBU journeys: “Future success in the entertainment business world will depend not just on the knowledge one gains in university, but also the ability to think beyond the box to solve problems and create new changes. Students in this programme get the opportunities to meet people from all walks of life and will be inspired by each encounter.”
