Ms Vicky Man, Senior Lecturer of the Language Centre, has received the University Grants Committee (UGC) Teaching Award for Collaborative Teams as a member of the English Across the Curriculum (EAC) Team.

The EAC team is spearheaded by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Other members include experienced educators from City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Supplementing standalone English courses, EAC initiatives offer students timely, tailor-made and targeted English learning materials across different disciplines. They also create synergy and opportunities for collaboration between English teachers and those from other subjects. To date, EAC has reached over 30 departments, 60 courses, 100 teachers and 10,000 students.

One of the student-centred innovations created by the EAC team is the development of an interactive mobile app called Capstone Ninja. As the first app of its kind, Capstone Ninja incorporates English learning modules and bite-sized quizzes/exercises, and it enables undergraduate students to access discipline-specific, customised learning materials in real time while they complete their capstone/final-year projects. The app has embedded communication tools such as text-chat functions to connect teachers and students during the learning journey, and it also features a scheduler to help students manage the writing process.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic-induced disruption to traditional educational pathways, Capstone Ninja offers a mobile-based solution, and it has proven to be a timely innovation that empowers both students and teachers alike.
