Exploring career opportunities and culture in Germany

30 Apr 2026

Excitement, enthusiasm and curiosity filled the air as a steady stream of students connected with representatives from leading German companies across different industries and learnt about international work and study opportunities at the German Business and Career Expo on campus.

Held on 22 April, the Expo was hosted by HKBU’s International Office in collaboration with the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Hong Kong and the German Industry and Commerce Ltd. It was a key event under the Consul-General-in-Residence Programme (CGiR), a first-of-its-kind initiative in Hong Kong and a signature programme at HKBU since 2004. Supported by the Lam Kin Chung Morning Sun Charity Fund, CGiR aims to promote internationalisation and cultural exchange at the University.

Cultivating students' global perspectives

“It is essential for students to develop a global perspective and the competence to work in cross-cultural ways so they can contribute effectively to society in the future. At HKBU, we believe a key strategy for developing a global mindset and cultural understanding is deep cultural immersion,” said Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), at his opening address at the Expo. “The event today marks a great occasion for students to explore opportunities for professional and personal development in Germany.”

Dr Chau also highlighted HKBU’s strong ties with Germany. In addition to the German stream to its European Studies programme, the University has established partnerships with over 30 education institutions in Germany.

Echoing this sentiment, Dr Annika Bolten-Drutschmann, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany to Hong Kong and Macau, said the Expo underscored the strong economic links between Germany and Hong Kong while fostering meaningful connections and knowledge exchange. “With today’s event, we seek to build an even stronger bridge between German businesses and the exceptional talent at HKBU. We aim to showcase not just career paths and how compelling Germany is as a work destination, but we also wish to build relationships, share ideas, and foster a deeper understanding,” she remarked.

The Expo was officiated by Dr Chau and Dr Bolten-Drutschmann. Guests joining the opening ceremony included Ms Lea Etsebeth, Delegate and Chief Representative of the German Industry and Commerce Ltd.; Dr Lam Kin-chung, Chairman of the Lam Kin Chung Morning Sun Charity Fund and Honorary Vice-President of the HKBU Foundation; Ms Yvonne Lee, Director of the International Office; Professor Amy Lee, Director of Student Affairs; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement at HKBU.

Throughout the Expo, a dynamic lineup of renowned German companies showcased their excellence across a wide spectrum of sectors, from technology and logistics to finance, retail, sustainability, and culture. The programme featured engaging company sharing sessions that offered insider insights into industry trends, alongside an inspiring alumna sharing session. Participating organisations highlighted roles and initiatives spanning banking, electronics, intelligent transportation and cultural promotion. Attracted by the rich learning and networking opportunities, around 700 students attended the Expo, engaging with professionals and gaining first-hand insights into a broad range of career pathways.

A taste of Germany

Adding to the experience, students enjoyed an authentic taste of Germany through signature dishes prepared by a local Michelin‑selected restaurant. They also sampled an array of delicious bread and Bavarian food staples, immersing themselves in a vibrancy of flavours and the open-air dining culture Germany is known for. In an informal and relaxing environment designed for fostering a sense of community, students learnt about the German culture and gained global awareness.

With non-local students from 70 different countries and regions studying at HKBU, including a significant community from Germany, this event celebrated cultural diversity on campus and highlighted the exciting career opportunities available to students as they prepare to thrive in an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
