A new learning journey begins at HKBU

HKBU holds its 71st Convocation to welcome a new cohort of more than 2,900 undergraduate students.

Late summer has brought drizzles and unstable weather to Hong Kong, but it did little to dampen the spirits of students and faculty, who returned to the HKBU campus with energy and excitement for the new school year.

Welcoming new students at 71st Convocation

The University welcomed a new cohort of more than 2,900 undergraduate students at the 71st Convocation held on 28 August. The ceremony was presided over by Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU. Other officiating guests included Dr Sunny Chai, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court; Mr Kevin Liem, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.

In his address, Professor Alex Wai quoted the University’s 70th Anniversary slogan, “Act with Faith, Create the Future”, encouraging the freshmen to be confident and courageous as they explore the many possibilities ahead.

He pointed out that artificial intelligence (AI) is now deeply woven into the social fabric, and the key is to learn to use AI as a tool, ethically and responsibly. “I cannot stress this enough, that AI is not meant to replace critical and creative thinking. On the contrary, the qualities that remain distinctly human, namely visionary leadership, sound judgment, empathy, courage, and making meaningful connections, will always set you apart and keep you competitive, no matter how much the world has evolved,” he said.

“To help you navigate this dynamic landscape, HKBU has been championing transdisciplinary education, ensuring our graduates are versatile enough for any career path they choose.” Professor Wai encouraged the freshmen to immerse themselves fully in HKBU’s transdisciplinary learning environment.

This year marks a record-high intake of more than 840 non-local freshmen from 28 countries and regions, reflecting the growing internationalisation and diversity of the HKBU community, while reinforcing the University’s commitment to promoting and implementing the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.

To welcome the incoming exchange and international students, HKBU’s International Office has organised a series of orientation events, beginning with an official ceremony on 26 August. The students were greeted with remarks from Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning). He encouraged students to explore, engage in dialogues, and experience life in Hong Kong and beyond.

To provide non-local students with rich learning experiences, HKBU will organise a series of immersive tours around Hong Kong and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) for non-local students to gain a deeper understanding of Hong Kong as an international city where East meets West, as well as the leading technology development in the GBA.

Dr Allan Zeman, Chairman of the Lan Kwai Fong Group, gave the keynote address at the ceremony. Reflecting on his personal and professional journey, Dr Zeman spoke about his entrepreneurial endeavours and his contribution to Hong Kong’s development, including the transformation of Lan Kwai Fong into a world-renowned brand and the achievements of the Hong Kong Ocean Park when he served as its Chairman. He advised students to pursue their passions, learn from each other, and adopt a positive outlook on life.

At the orientation events, freshmen and non-local students were introduced to different aspects of teaching and learning at HKBU and other useful information essential to prepare them for a fulfilling campus life at the University.
