HKBU History Gallery celebrates 70 years of rich heritage

In celebration of the University’s seven decades of excellence, the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) History Gallery has recently reopened, with enriched contents and exhibits to showcase the pivotal moments in HKBU’s history and preserve its legacy.

Located at Level 2 of the Lam Woo International Conference Centre on Shaw Campus, the HKBU History Gallery debuted in 2016 and has recently undergone a significant makeover as part of the University’s 70th anniversary celebrations this year. Through carefully preserved artifacts and multimedia displays, the Gallery chronicles HKBU’s unique journey from the founding of Hong Kong Baptist College in 1956 to its retitling as a university in 1994 and its evolution into one of Asia’s leading universities.

At the Gallery, visitors can experience the evolution of the University’s campus spaces through an interactive digital display of the HKBU TimeScape: Campus Development Map, a new digital humanities platform developed by HKBU Library in collaboration with the Department of History. Incorporated with historical aerial photos and topographic maps, the interactive map allows viewers to visualise the campus and its surrounding landscape at various stages of its history.

Students, faculty and the public can gain a deeper understanding of HKBU’s founding mission and educational values from viewing the curated collection of historical photos, news clippings and precious exhibits. In addition, the Gallery features a timeline and photo walls showing the milestone development and achievements of the University over the years.

The BU Bridge was also recently renovated. The footbridge first opened to the public in 1999, providing a more direct access between the Ho Sin Hang Campus and the Shaw Campus. Lined with photo displays of diverse buildings across campuses, the reopened bridge invites the University community to explore different corners of HKBU which are tailored to academic and extracurricular life.
