HKBU officially renamed its Faculty of Science as the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) on 1 September. The new name better expresses the Faculty’s ongoing endeavours to play a leading role in advancing education and research in science and technological innovations.
Advancing science and technology development
The Faculty of Science and Technology, founded in 1961, has been delivering quality education and making impactful discoveries through its five departments, including Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics.
“In the past 65 years, we have always looked ahead to new frontiers and built up our excellence in education, research and knowledge transfer. Today, our work spans a wider range of scientific and technological disciplines, reflecting the growth of our expertise, innovation and impact,” says Professor Michael Ng, Dean of Science and Technology.
“The Faculty’s new name will bring our evolving identity to the forefront, showcasing our twin pillars of excellence in both science and technology. It also captures the true breadth of our activities, while further supporting our strategic development, attracting outstanding talent, and bolstering our overall international reputation and impact.”
The renaming of FST aligns with HKBU’s efforts to spearhead transdisciplinary education and research collaborations, integrating the knowledge of different disciplines to drive innovations and nurture future leaders to tackle complex global issues. This reflects a forward-thinking approach within the University to create comprehensive and transdisciplinary solutions for building a more sustainable future.
Marking a strategic step forward
To celebrate this new chapter of FST, the University held the Renaming Ceremony for HKBU Faculty of Science and Technology on 31 August, bringing together around 300 distinguished guests, industry partners, alumni, faculty and students.
The light up ceremony was officiated by Mr Kevin Liem, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Liu Jiming, Interim Provost; Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Rick Wong, Former Dean of Science; and Professor Michael Ng, Dean of Science and Technology.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr Kevin Liem expressed his hope that FST would play an even more significant role in promoting knowledge transfer and nurturing future-ready leaders equipped with transdisciplinary thinking, global perspectives and core competitiveness. “By leveraging its strengths in innovation and technology, I am confident that the Faculty will be uniquely empowered to transform cutting-edge research into practical applications that benefit society,” he said.
Professor Alex Wai noted that FST’s development is closely intertwined with the University’s own transformation, and that the renaming is both timely and necessary. “The new name better reflects the Faculty’s evolving positioning and strengths, while fully embodying its academic breadth and social impact. This evolution also aligns with the strategic goal to build the nation into a leading country in education, science and technology, and talent by 2035,” he said.
Professor Michael Ng said: “As we begin this new chapter, we will continue to attract outstanding global talent to the Faculty. Moreover, we will continue to deepen partnerships with industry and the community and empower our students and researchers to tackle the defining challenges of our time.”
The renaming of FST not only marks a strategic step forward in the Faculty’s development, but also reaffirms its commitment to pushing boundaries through excellence in comprehensive education and innovative research, and promoting scientific and technological literacy in society.
