An admirable showcase of solidarity by HKBU marathon runners

30 Jan 2026

Over 800 HKBU students, staff and alumni ran for their personal best or simply took part to savour the festive vibe at the annual "Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2026" held on 18 January. Their participation marked a record-breaking turnout for the University, showcasing a strong sense of solidarity as the University celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, was among the many supporters who came to cheer for the runners. "As we celebrate HKBU’s 70th anniversary, this year’s Hong Kong Marathon provides a perfect stage to showcase our community spirit in the pursuit of excellence and breakthroughs. I hope that all members of HKBU will carry this passion forward, further elevating our research and contributing innovative solutions to society," says Dr Wong.

Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, also joined his fellow HKBU runners in competing for the inaugural "University Challenge Cup", with the HKBU team claiming the 2nd runner-up title.

Professor Wai highlights, "This year, we have the largest HKBU Marathon Team ever, which makes this 70th-anniversary year even more memorable. Witnessing the camaraderie among our runners and supporters on the road today was a joy. This remarkable unity will undoubtedly propel HKBU towards new milestones."

The sense of solidarity and community spirit before, during and after the Marathon, were no less impressive. The University has offered runners structured training programmes under the guidance of professional coaches since last November. Each runner was also gifted with an exclusive runner’s pack, complete with a windbreaker, running shirt, and essential gear.

Throughout the race, the HKBU student cheerleading team cheered on the participants with their delightfully curated cheering routines. Last but not least, to ensure the participants’ well-being after the race, HKBU set up a support booth at the handball court at Victoria Park, where a team of Chinese medicine practitioners and students offered HKBU runners physical assessments and advice for post-race recovery, reinforcing the University’s commitment to the well-being of its community.

As the University celebrates its 70th Anniversary in 2026, this spirit of purpose and passion will no doubt echo throughout the year, inspiring everyone to "Act with Faith, Create the Future".
