Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation at a Thanksgiving Reception today (21 January). The University also took the opportunity to express its heartfelt appreciation to around 200 Foundation members, supporters, alumni and friends of the University for their steadfast support of the Foundation.
At the event, Dr Kennedy Wong, HKBU Foundation Chairman, and Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, presented certificates to Honorary Vice-Presidents, Honorary Directors and Directors of the Foundation to express the University's gratitude for their generosity.
Speaking at the Reception, Dr Wong thanked members of the public for their tremendous support towards the sustainable development of HKBU. He said that the scale of the Foundation has grown steadily over the years. Over time the number of Foundation members has also increased from 131 at the time of its establishment in 2009 to 674 currently, with a total of HK$1.36 billion in donations providing a solid financial base to sustain the University's ongoing development.
Dr Wong added that HKBU has launched several innovative projects with public donations. This includes the launch of the Hong Kong Baptist University -- Jockey Club Chinese Medicine Disease Prevention and Health Management Centre with funding from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust; the establishment of the Institute of Bioresource and Agriculture with the support from the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; and the founding of the Golden Meditech Centre for NeuroRegeneration Sciences with a donation from well-known entrepreneur Mr Kam Yuen. The aforementioned examples not only enhance the quality of teaching and learning at HKBU but also benefit society.
In his speech, Professor Chin shared recent alumni achievements and the University's latest developments, including the campus development plans. The development of a new hostel and academic building complex on Renfrew Road, which is expected to be completed in 2023-24, will provide a total of 1,700 hostel places and 6,900 square metres of academic space. Although the University has secured financial support from the HKSAR government for parts of the above campus development project, it continues to receive financial support from members of the public to help meet the target.
To help address the University's long-term development needs, the HKBU Foundation was established in 2009 to consolidate support from all sectors of society and to enhance the University's fundraising capabilities. It also aims to secure more resources to sustain the University's advancement in every sphere to uphold HKBU's ethos of a Whole Person Education.
