31 March 2019
The Department of Marketing, which is part of the School of Business at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), marked the start of the second year of the Jockey Club Responsible Consumption Programme with the Hong Kong Secondary School Marketing Contest 2019.
Supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Programme is focusing on a "plastic free" theme this year and aims to promote the reduced use of plastic bags, packaging materials and disposables. A briefing session and workshop for the Hong Kong Secondary School Marketing Contest 2019 was held on 30 March (Saturday) and attracted a total of 111 teams, including over 444 Secondary Three to Five students.
Co-organised by HKBU Department of Marketing, the Education Bureau Business-School Partnership Programme, Consumer Council and HKCSS-HSBC Social Enterprise Business Centre, the Hong Kong Secondary School Marketing Contest 2019 consists of three stages. In the first stage, each participating team has to produce a one-minute video to advocate the reduced use of plastic bags and packaging materials. In the second stage, 25 shortlisted teams will be given a series of training opportunities, including a variety of workshops, visits, and a two-day training camp. Students will have the chance to exchange views and ideas with corporate representatives and HKBU marketing scholars, and will also have the opportunity to explore real market needs. A total of five teams will be selected for the final round. An award presentation and closing ceremony will be held on 23 June.
In his remarks, Dr Henry Fock, Head of the Department of Marketing at HKBU, thanked The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for supporting the programme. "Riding on the success of the Jockey Club Responsible Consumption Programme last year, we will continue to join hands with different parties to promote a culture of responsible consumption among the community. Through a series of activities, participants will be able to gain insights from the application of marketing theory in the real world, develop an in-depth understanding of sustainable consumption, and shift consumer behaviours in daily life."
Mr Howard Ling, Chief Consultant of The Hong Kong Council of Social Service - Social Enterprise Business, said: "Responsible consumption (and production) is one of the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ of the United Nations and is a pressing global issue. We can no longer neglect the urgency of tackling plastic pollution. Social ventures could also play a role."
To further spread the message, an educational TV series will be produced by the end of this year. Four episodes, featuring different experts, will be broadcast with the aim of encouraging people to adopt a green and plastic-free lifestyle.
