The Council of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has approved the appointment of Professor Guo Yike (郭毅可教授) as Vice-President (Research and Development), with effect from 1 January 2020.
Professor Guo is currently Professor of Computing Science in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London, UK. He is the founding Director of the Data Science Institute at Imperial College, which is one of the six Global Challenge Institutes driving multidisciplinary research through the application of data science and artificial intelligence technology. He became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a Member of Academia Europaea in 2018.
Welcoming the appointment, Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said: "Professor Guo is a prominent scholar with an outstanding track record in teaching, research and academic leadership. I am confident that his impressive research achievements, global insight, and international experience in multi-disciplinary research collaboration as well as extensive connections with academia and industry will help to strengthen and advance research at HKBU."
Professor Guo is a pioneer in data science and has developed innovative technology for data analysis and machine learning. His recent work focuses on applying data science and data mining in the fields of life science, healthcare, environment science and design creativity.
Professor Guo received a bachelor's degree in Computing Science from Tsinghua University in China and a PhD in Computer Science from Imperial College. He joined Imperial College in 1997 and became a Professor in 2002.
As Vice-President (Research and Development) of HKBU, Professor Guo will lead the development of the University's overall research strategy, research infrastructure and postgraduate education. He will also promote the translation of research results into impactful contributions to the community and foster the establishment of global research partnerships.
The University set up a Search Committee for the role of Vice-President (Research and Development) in November 2018. The HKBU Council approved the Search Committee's recommendation of Professor Guo's appointment at its meeting on 18 June 2019 following three open forum sessions for Professor Guo to meet members of the University community.
