Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) announced today (26 November) that Professor Roland T Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, will retire after the completion of his current five-year term on 31 August 2020.

Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the HKBU Council and Court, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Chin for his immense contributions to the University.

“With his vision of shaping HKBU as a leading liberal arts University in Asia for the world, President Chin has inspired the whole of HKBU to put forth robust efforts to take the University to a new level of excellence. These include laying down and implementing the University’s Strategic Plan 2018-28 with a focus on providing the best student experience, lifting the University’s research capabilities, and spearheading the Talent100 initiative that puts HKBU prominently on the global universities map.

“President Chin has put firmly in place at HKBU all the necessary conditions and capacities for the University to accelerate on a clear trajectory to world-class excellence. We now have a stronger faculty, a greater talent pool, a renewed focus on research, a shared commitment to teaching excellence, a more international BU community, and a more closely engaged network of alumni and supporters both locally and overseas. On the infrastructure side, a brand new Campus of Creativity is being built and is well on schedule to provide four student hostel blocks plus a creative hub with state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities in about three years. The redevelopment of the Ho Sin Hang Campus is also underway.”

“President Chin has built up an unstoppable growth momentum for HKBU,” said Dr Chen.

President Chin said it has been a distinct honour and privilege for him to lead HKBU to complete its transformation into a research-led liberal arts University.

“With the Strategic Plan well underway, it is in the best interests of the HKBU community for me to hand over the baton to the next generation of leadership at a time when this great University is all set for its next stage of development,” President Chin said.

Dr Chen said the Council has initiated a global search for the new President and Vice-Chancellor, and further details would be announced as the search progresses.
