Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has launched a new competition which aims to inspire creativity in secondary school students across Hong Kong in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Organised by the Department of Music and the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning at HKBU, the "Listen to Yourself: Wonder from home" creative expression competition invites students to listen to one of the five pieces of uplifting music composed by HKBU students and alumni, and come up with a drawing, piece of creative writing or photography which reflects their thoughts on fighting the epidemic.
Showcasing the University's care for the community, the competition encourages the public to overcome adversity together, and it is part of HKBU's "Beat the virus, BU&I" community campaign (http://beat-the-virus.hkbu.edu.hk/index.html). The competition is now open for entries, and the winning submissions will be showcased on social media and other platforms.
The five pieces of music were produced by students and alumni from the HKBU Department of Music using their voices and various musical instruments, such as the flute and clarinet. The pieces were also played at TriAngle, a new co-working space at HKBU, to enhance students’ learning efficiency and creativity.
The selection process consists of two stages. In the first stage, a judging panel formed by HKBU staff members and student composers from the Department of Music will shortlist the ten finalists for each piece of music. In the second stage, the best three entries for each piece of music will be selected through an online vote.
Entries should be submitted online on or before 17 April 2020. HKBU will select one winning and two outstanding entries for each piece of music, and the results will be announced in mid-May.
