The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has organised the "First CITYA 2021: City as a Medium" international art exhibition, and it will take place in six cities around the world. A total of more than 40 artists from Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao, Tallinn, Rome and San Francisco will showcase their artworks in their respective cities in online or physical exhibitions from 17 September to 16 November. The art pieces explore the inter-relationship between actual and digital spaces, and they reflect the diverse social phenomena that have arisen in those cities during the pandemic.
Some of the exhibits, including new media art, paintings, photography and video art, will be displayed using digital media, while others will take the traditional form of sculptures and installations. The Hong Kong session of the "First CITYA 2021: City as a Medium" physical exhibition will be held on the Kowloon Tong and Kai Tak campuses of HKBU, at the Cattle Depot Art Village and in Lai Chi Wo from 17 September to 8 October, and it will showcase the artworks of 13 AVA artists. The "CITYA Youth Current" exhibition, which is presented by young local artists as a paralleled exhibition in CITYA, will also be held on HKBU's Kai Tak campus during the same period.
The opening ceremony of the "First CITYA 2021: City as a Medium" international art exhibition will be held on 17 September at 8:00pm on the rooftop of the Lee Shau Kee Communication and Visual Arts Building at HKBU. A live-streamed broadcast of the ceremony and details of the exhibitions in different cities will be available on the website on the same day. Members of the public who wish to visit the exhibitions on the HKBU campuses are required to make an online reservation one day in advance. Successful registrants will be notified.
Ms Janet Fong Man-yee, Research Assistant Professor of AVA, one of the initiators of CITYA and the curator of its Hong Kong session exhibition, said: "CITYA explores the inter-relationship of spatiality between the actual space and digital space. We have invited artists to express their thoughts on the exhibition's theme 'City as a medium' through their art creations, and we have encouraged them to interpret the same theme in the post-pandemic era."
CITYA is an international art exchange project launched by AVA at HKBU for local and international artists, curators and institutions. Inaugurated in 2021, CITYA will organise large-scale events every three years.
