Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has enrolled ten top athletes on its undergraduate programmes through its Elite Athletes Admission Scheme (EAAS) this year. The athletes specialise in karatedo, handball, rugby, artistic swimming, football, shuttlecock and lifesaving. It is the first time that a shuttlecock athlete has joined HKBU through the Scheme.

The ten student athletes are either current or former members of Hong Kong sports teams. They received scholarship awards under the EAAS. Nine of them are admitted to the Physical Education and Recreation Management (PERM) programme and one to the Applied Biology programme at HKBU.

The scholarship presentation ceremony was held today (28 October). Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, presented certificates to the scholarship recipients at the ceremony.

Professor Julien Baker, Head of the Department of Sport, Physical Education and Health at HKBU, said in his speech that he hopes the best student athletes join the University through the EAAS, and that he was very excited by the diversity contained within the EAAS cohort, with a broad range of sports included. "The Scheme continues to attract high performing talent each year, demonstrating both the sporting excellence within Hong Kong, and the commitment of the University in supporting athletes in pursuit of sport and education," he said.

Daniel Chan Ho-yuen, a bronze medallist in the Badminton Men's Singles WH2 event at the Paralympic Games, also previously enrolled on the University's PERM programme under the EAAS. At the ceremony, he encouraged his fellow students to pursue their dreams, and he shared his learning experiences from his time at HKBU.

The students who enrolled at HKBU under the EAAS this year are as follows:

PERM Year 1:
Cheung Chun-hei (Karatedo)
Tseung Tsui Sum-nam (Handball)

PERM Year 2:

Launched in 2016, the EAAS accepts local athletes' applications for UGC-funded undergraduate programmes through the JUPAS and Non-JUPAS admission schemes. The programme choices of the applicants are not limited to physical education programmes. Athletes are required to meet the minimum entry requirements of HKBU, and they should be members of HKSAR sports teams with a record of outstanding performances in the Olympics, Asian or other international games. Retired athletes of HKSAR sports teams who have achieved outstanding results in international sporting events are also eligible to apply.

Applications are now open for the 2022-23 EAAS, with the deadline for the JUPAS and Non-JUPAS schemes of 31 January and 4 January 2022, respectively.
