The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation hosted a dinner on 20 October to express its gratitude to members of the Foundation’s Board of Governors, Honorary Trustees, Honorary Permanent Presidents and Honorary Presidents, as well as supporters of the University for their generosity and staunch support over the years.
In his welcoming remarks, Dr Kennedy Wong, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Foundation, highlighted Hong Kong Baptist University’s (HKBU) impressive accomplishments, including the winning of multiple awards at the 2023 Geneva International Invention Exhibition, the approval of novel Chinese medicine for constipation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical trial, and the discovery of potential pancreatic cancer treatment by the herbal extract compound isoliquiritigenin.
Dr Wong said that the University will utilise the valuable resources gathered by the Foundation to provide continuous support to a number of major university initiatives such as interdisciplinary undergraduate programmes and individualised education, Chinese medicine clinical research at the first Chinese medicine hospital in Hong Kong, and advancements in art technology. He thanked the Board of Governors of the Foundation and members of various committees for their dedicated contributions, and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all supporters in the community.
In his speech, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, expressed his delight in the University's achievements in the past year. For example, the Report of Quality Audit of Hong Kong Baptist University released by the Quality Assurance Council of the University Grants Committee positively evaluated HKBU’s teaching and learning quality, confirming the University's adherence to academic standards and alignment with its strategic plan. HKBU has also made significant progress in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, rising to the range of 301-350. HKBU's student-athletes achieved stellar results at the 2023 World University Games and the Asian Games, and won numerous medals with their outstanding performance.
The Dinner was well attended by distinguished guests and HKBU representatives including Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman, and Ms Rosanna Choi, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Professor Justin Chiu, Vice-Chairmen of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation; Dr Chloe Suen , Co-Chairman of the Young Entrepreneur Committee; Professor Sunny Wong, Chairman of the Alumni Committee; Professor Martin Wong, Provost, Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary, and Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer of HKBU; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement of HKBU and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.
Since its inception in 2009, the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation has recorded steady growth in terms of both membership and donation totals. Its membership has risen from 131 to 918, an impressive growth of 600%. Over the past 14 years, the Foundation has received donations and donation pledges amounting to more than HK$4.82 billion, providing a solid financial bedrock for HKBU’s advancement.
