HKBU and the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong sign MOU to foster research and collaboration

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (CMA) have formed a partnership and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 22 November. Their shared vision is to promote the innovation and technology development in Hong Kong, with a specific focus on fostering collaborative research into advancing green and life science technologies, as well as facilitating knowledge transfer.

Under this university-industry partnership, the collaboration will focus on driving innovation and progress in the areas of green finance, carbon neutrality, biotechnology, property technology, and sustainability. HKBU and CMA will join forces to address the innovation challenges faced by the industries and share technology updates provided by the researchers and start-ups. Both parties will explore potential opportunities for business matching, commercialisation, and collaborative research. They will also utilise their promotion channels and networks to share market insights, knowledge, and technology trends through seminars and forums.

In a signing ceremony held on the HKBU campus, the MOU was signed by Professor Terence Lau, Interim Chief Innovation Officer of HKBU, and Mr Ralph Chow, Chief Executive Officer of CMA, in the presence of Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, and Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak, President of CMA. The ceremony was attended by guests including Dr Chan Kwok-man, Vice President of CMA; Mr Dominic Lam, Chief Operations Officer of CMA Testing; and Mr YK Lau, General Manager – Technology Commercialisation and Business Strategy of CMA Testing.

Professor Alexander Wai said: “HKBU strongly supports and encourages professors to conduct translational research. We are currently establishing a Chinese medicine translational centre at the Hong Kong Science Park. Leveraging our foundations in Chinese medicine, the centre will provide the infrastructure and resources for technology development and demonstration, and facilitate more innovative and translational projects related to health. These initiatives will bolster HKBU’s endeavours in innovation and entrepreneurial development.

“I look forward to a close partnership between HKBU and CMA to foster innovations as well as impactful technology collaboration and application. We will also work together to promote Hong Kong’s industrial and commercial development through a series of exchanges and activities that facilitates knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, for the betterment of society and the general public,” he added.

Dr Allen Shi Lop-tak said: “By establishing closer ties, HKBU’s research team will be able to promptly disseminate their research outcomes to the industry and seek opportunities for industry matching and collaborative research. On the other hand, the industries can also share their challenges and pain points encountered during the innovation and transformation process with HKBU researchers. As a result, research efforts can closely align with the technological development trends and market demands of different industries, ultimately enhancing our efficiency and competitiveness.”
