Writer Wang Anyi named 2023 Distinguished Chinese Writer of HKBU Chinese Writers’ Workshop

Founded by the Faculty of Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), the annual Chinese Writers’ Workshop (CWW) will host its “Distinguished Chinese Writers Series 2023” (DCWS). Renowned Chinese writer Ms Wang Anyi will visit HKBU and share her insights with readers at a literary public lecture and a writing masterclass on 11 and 13 October respectively.

The Faculty of Arts at HKBU has long been committed to promoting Chinese writers to its teachers, students, and the public. Launched in 2020 and sponsored by the Tin Ka Ping Foundation, CWW is dedicated to promoting contemporary Chinese literature and culture to society, the nation, and the world. It also aims to showcase the diversity and richness of Chinese literary culture. In autumn every year, CWW invites a distinguished Chinese writer from different places around the world to visit HKBU.

Ms Wang Anyi is currently a Professor of the Fudan University in Shanghai, Vice President of the Chinese Writers Association, and President of the Shanghai Writers Association. She is renowned for her ability to weave captivating storylines into her works, which reveal the complexity of humans and different dimensions of life. In her novels, short stories, essays and critiques, she outlines authentic and vivid portraits of the characters with a unique perspective, making the readers feel as if they are immersed in the scene.

Her representative works include The Song of Everlasting Sorrow, The Age of Enlightenment, Heavenly Fragrance and Artificer's Record. She has received numerous honours including the Lu Xun Literary Prize, the Xiao Hong Women’s Literary Award, the first prize of the 4th Dream of the Red Chamber Award, and the “Good Book” Prize presented by the China Times in Taiwan. In this year’s DCWS, Ms Wang will deliver a public lecture entitled “The Journey of Fiction Writing” on 11 October to share her experience and insights in writing novels. She will also discuss how to establish the context of novels with the participants in her masterclass entitled “Build Up a Novel” on 13 October. All events are free of charge.
