The University has collaborated with Beijing University of Chinese Medicine to establish the Australia-China Chinese Medicine Centre, dedicated to promoting diverse international cooperation in Chinese medicine and fostering the integration of traditional Chinese medicine with modern science.

This strategic collaboration aims to reinforce Hong Kong’s important role in the global advancement of Chinese medicine and to facilitate international collaboration and exchange in the field. Key objectives include advancing research in traditional Chinese medicine, enhancing cross-regional exchanges, fostering the research on herb-drug interactions and its clinical application, and elevating global recognition of Chinese medicine through joint research initiatives.

Members of the visiting delegation included Mr Huen Wong, Dr Cheung Wai-lun, Dr Vincent Chung Chi-ho, Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development of HHB, Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Hospital Chief Executive of CMHHK.

CMHHK’s partnership with Western Sydney University will bolster its international network, foster dialogue between Eastern and Western medicine, and promote internationalisation of Chinese medicine by virtue of Hong Kong’s unique role and advantages.

Mr Huen Wong stated, “Earlier this year, The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Germany’s TCM-Klinik Bad Kötzting. Our new collaboration with Western Sydney University will further accelerate the advancement of Chinese medicine through enhanced international cooperation, sharing of clinical experiences, and talent exchange.”

Dr Cheung Wai-lun said, “This collaboration not only advances the international exchange and development of Chinese medicine but also demonstrates the HKSAR Government’s commitment to it. Looking ahead, we will fully leverage Hong Kong’s strategic position as a window to the world for the internationalisation of Chinese medicine. We look forward to the establishment of collaborative partnerships between the CMHHK and more medical and academic institutions across the Mainland and internationally.”

CMHHK, located at 1 Pak Shing Kok Road, Tseung Kwan O, will commence operations in phases in December 2025. It is being constructed by the Government, and HKBU was appointed as the contractor of the service deed in June 2021 through a tendering process. Subsequently, HKBU registered “HKBU Chinese Medicine Hospital Company Limited” as the operator in accordance with the requirements of the service deed, which is responsible for the management, operation, and maintenance of CMHHK. CMHHK will provide quality Chinese medicine services to the public and serve as a hub for clinical teaching and research in the field.
