Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held a flag-raising ceremony on campus this morning (1 July) to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China.

The ceremony was attended by about 150 Council and Court members, senior management team members, faculty, staff, alumni and students of the University. The national flag together with the HKSAR flag and the HKBU flag were solemnly raised by the HKBU Student Flag-raising Team.

In his address, Dr the Hon Kennedy Wong Ying-ho, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, said that under “One Country, Two Systems”, Hong Kong has the distinctive advantage of enjoying strong support of the Motherland and being closely connected to the world. Over the past 28 years, Hong Kong has achieved remarkable development with substantial backing from the Motherland, marked by continuous social progress and stable livelihoods for its citizens. Hong Kong is evolving into an international education hub, attracting talents with diverse backgrounds and fields from around the world.

“As a higher education institution in Hong Kong, HKBU will work proactively with the HKSAR Government and all sectors of the community to create the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand. We strive to cultivate young people with national sentiment and global perspective through a transdisciplinary learning approach,” said Dr Wong.

Dr Wong also pointed out that all sectors of Hong Kong society share the responsibility to safeguard national security, and the higher education sector should shoulder the indispensable duty of strengthening national security education and building robust safeguards across our campuses.

This flag-raising ceremony brought together the HKBU community to celebrate the 28th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the Motherland. Upholding its mission to nurture outstanding talents, HKBU remains committed to guiding youth to seize national development opportunities while cultivating global perspectives, thereby contributing to the prosperity and progress of both Hong Kong and the Motherland.
