The Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) under the School of Creative Arts (SCA) at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) will present its Master of Arts in Visual Arts Graduation Show 2025 from 12 to 27 July at the HKBU Kai Tak Campus, featuring the works of 23 graduating students.
The theme of the exhibition “Symbiosis”, originating from the Greek word symbíōsis, signifies collaborative and companionable relationships . It also draws on the core ideas of the cultural metaphor, “learning from the same master yet blossoming differently”, from the Qing Dynasty novel Flowers in the Mirror by Li Ruzhen. By sharing a common ground, the 23 graduating students have now flourished and branched into their own diverse and vibrant directions. The exhibition explores their divergence and resonant growth, allowing the audience to understand how artistic vision thrives through both inherited wisdom and creativity.
The graduating students transform the abstract concept of “symbiosis” into vibrant, visual stories, employing a range of materials and forms including fine art, design, media art and photography. Through these multifaceted expressions, they explore the entangled relationships between their personal insight and shared roots, delving into the themes of identity, memory, ritual, displacement, connection, and the extraordinary within the ordinary. These artworks resemble branches of a symbiotic tree, originating from the same bud yet blossoming into unique expressions shaped by individual experiences and artistic ideals. Photos and descriptions of six selected artworks from the exhibition can be downloaded here.
