Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) welcomes the passage of the Hong Kong Baptist University (Amendment) Bill 2025 by the Legislative Council (LegCo) today (26 September).
The passage of the Bill marks an important milestone for HKBU as it updates the University’s objects, enhances good governance and better positions the University to achieve its vision of becoming a leading university in Asia for the world.
Dr the Hon Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, expressed his gratitude to LegCo for supporting of the Bill. He said: “The passage of the Bill is crucial in strengthening HKBU’s capabilities to meet future challenges in the ever-changing global education and academic landscape. It also consolidates the University’s core foundation so that it is well-placed to seize the development opportunities of Hong Kong and the Nation, contributing to the establishment of Hong Kong as an international hub for post-secondary education, an international innovation and technology centre and an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.”
Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, said: “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the stakeholders who have contributed to the preparation of the Bill and its legislative process. The Bill addressed the expanded roles expected of a university at the academic frontier, explicitly integrating knowledge transfer and community services as key objectives of HKBU. It also provides an enhanced governance framework marked by public accountability and broad representation. These elements are vital in supporting HKBU’s pursuit of a higher level of excellence following nearly 70 years of remarkable growth and accomplishment.”
The Bill as passed will become effective upon gazettal.
