HKBU names new residential college after Mr Lo Siu Tong

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has named one of the four residential colleges that constitute  the Village CARE at the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity as “Lo Siu Tong College”, in appreciation of a generous donation of HK$100 million from Mr Lo Siu Tong and the Lo family in support of the University’s strategic development. 

The naming ceremony was held on 17 October. Officiating guests from the Lo family included Professor Alexander Law and his wife Mrs Iris Law; Mrs Mildred Lee and her husband Mr Warren Lee; Mr Francis Law and his wife Dr Elina Law; Mrs Mona Ma; and Mr Dennis Law. HKBU representatives included Dr the Hon Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU cum Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation; and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.

At the ceremony, Dr the Hon Kennedy Y H Wong expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous contributions made by the late Mr Lo Siu Tong and his family. He commended Mr Lo for his generosity and dedication to society, particularly highlighting his significant contributions to the advancement of education. He said: “Today's naming ceremony signifies the strong bond between the Lo family and HKBU. Naming this 11-storey student hostel block after Mr Lo is not only a tribute to his legacy, but also a reflection of the shared commitment of the Lo family and HKBU to the pursuit of ‘Whole Person Education’.”

In his speech on behalf of the Lo family, Professor Alexander Law emphasised the profound impact of residential education on university students’ personal development. He stated: “We hope that the Lo Siu Tong College will foster transdisciplinary collaboration and encourage interaction among students from diverse fields, serving as a vital hub for nurturing future leaders.”

The brand-new Village CARE, located at the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity at HKBU, is the first large-scale facility in Hong Kong that integrates teaching, learning, creative and living spaces. It seamlessly blends academic and residential life, allowing students to live and learn together in an environment rich with artistic culture and academic ambience. Each residential college within Village CARE adopts a unique theme. Lo Siu Tong College, which provides 468 student beds, is guided by the principle of “Arts and Culture”. It offers a variety of themed courses and activities to enhance students’ academic pursuits and learning experiences, thereby advancing HKBU’s mission of “Whole Person Education”.

Other guests attending the ceremony included Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU; Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary of HKBU; Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement of HKBU and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation, and Professor Amy Lee, Director of Student Affairs of HKBU.
