The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation (Foundation) hosted a dinner on 24 October to express its gratitude to members of the Foundation’s Board of Governors and committees, as well as the supporters of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) for their generosity and staunch support over the years.
In his welcoming remarks, Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Foundation, said that the Foundation successfully secured several major donations last year, laying a solid foundation for the University’s pursuit of its vision.
He highlighted that HKBU had raised a remarkable HK$1.37 billion in the first round of the Research Matching Grant Scheme, which concluded last year, and expressed his hope that HKBU will continue to receive support in the new round of the Scheme, enabling the University to further strengthen its research capabilities and drive the development of innovative technologies and interdisciplinary research. He added that with the completion of Hong Kong’s first Chinese medicine hospital, HKBU’s teaching and research capabilities are poised to reach new heights.
In his speech, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, shared several of the University’s recent major achievements, including the HKBU Transdisciplinary Innovation Team receiving the 2025 University Grants Committee Teaching Award in the collaborative teams category, which recognises the effectiveness of HKBU’s transdisciplinary curriculum reform.
He also highlighted that HKBU has made significant advancements in research and innovation, marked by growth in both funded projects and awards, as well as outstanding performance in multiple influential global university rankings, e.g., placing among the top 10% in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. He also said that HKBU will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year and expressed his eagerness to mark this milestone with the community.
The dinner was well attended by distinguished guests and HKBU representatives including Mr Paul Poon, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court; Ms Connie Wong, Co-Chairman of the Foundation’s Entrepreneur Committee; Dr Chloe Suen and Mr Ivan Wong, Co-Chairmen of the Young Entrepreneur Committee; Professor Sunny Wong, Chairman of the Alumni Committee; Dr Cheng Yan-kee, former Chairman of the Council and the Court; Professor Ng Ching-fai and Professor Roland Chin, Presidents Emeriti of HKBU; Professor Chen Zhi, President of Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University; as well as members of HKBU’s senior management team.
Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation’s membership has risen from 131 to 981, an impressive growth of 649%, and has received donations and donation pledges amounting to more than HK$5.3 billion, providing solid resources for the University’s development and supporting educational innovation and talent cultivation.
