Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held its 2026 New Year’s Day Flag Raising Ceremony on campus this morning (1 January). Led by Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, approximately 200 members of the HKBU community attended the ceremony, including Mr Kevin Liem, Treasurer; and other members of the Council and the Court; Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor; and other HKBU senior management team members; as well as faculty, staff, alumni, and students.
The National flag, along with the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the flag of HKBU, were solemnly raised by the HKBU Student Flag-raising Team at the ceremony.
In his address, Dr Wong remarked that HKBU achieved breakthroughs on all fronts of teaching and learning, research and knowledge transfer in 2025. These milestones, set to be recognised as defining chapters in HKBU’s distinguished history, include: the first Chinese medicine hospital of Hong Kong, operated by HKBU, commencing phased operations on 11 December 2025, ushering in a new era for the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong; the grand opening of the Jockey Club Campus of Creativity in March 2025, establishing a future-oriented creative education hub; the launch of a number of new transdisciplinary programmes and transdisciplinary second majors, as well as general education in artificial intelligence which revolutionised the structure of academic disciplines to address the challenges of the times; HKBU’s School of Continuing Education and the Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University celebrated their 50th and 20th anniversaries respectively, expanding the frontiers of higher education and its collaboration networks.
Dr Wong said: “Looking ahead, HKBU will continue to align closely with the strategic direction of the National 15th Five-Year Plan, and fully leverage its unique strengths to contribute proactively to the Nation’s grand vision of building a leading country in education. Meanwhile, we will fully engage in Hong Kong’s development as an international higher education hub, making proactive contributions to enhance the attractiveness and impact of the ‘Study in Hong Kong’ brand.” Dr Wong added that 2026 holds special significance for HKBU, as it marks the University’s 70th anniversary with a series of upcoming exciting celebration events.
As the new year begins, the flag-raising ceremony brought the HKBU community together to mark another year of committed endeavours ahead and inspire the ongoing pursuit of more remarkable accomplishments.
