The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Marathon Team, comprising a record-breaking number of over 800 staff, students and alumni, participated in the “Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2026” today (18 January). HKBU also competed in the event’s inaugural “University Challenge Cup,” claiming 2nd runner-up position and exemplifying the University’s enduring spirit of solidarity, determination, and pursuit of excellence.
Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, was present to cheer for the runners. Meanwhile, Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, joined his fellow HKBU runners in competing for the University Challenge Cup. Groups of supporters gathered at various checkpoints, rallying around the runners with enthusiastic cheers, while a student cheerleading team performed captivating routines to energise the participants.
Dr Wong said, “As we celebrate HKBU’s 70th anniversary, this year’s Hong Kong Marathon provides a perfect stage to showcase our community spirit in the pursuit of excellence and breakthroughs. I hope that all members of HKBU will carry this passion forward, further elevating our research and contributing innovative solutions to society.”
Professor Wai remarked, “This year, we have the largest HKBU Marathon Team ever, which makes this 70th-anniversary year even more memorable. Witnessing the camaraderie among our runners and supporters on the road today was a joy. This remarkable unity will undoubtedly propel HKBU towards new milestones.”
To prepare the runners, the University has organised structured training programmes led by professional coaches since November last year. In addition to sponsoring the entry fee, each HKBU participant received an exclusive runner’s pack, which included a windbreaker, running shirt, and essential gear. Today, HKBU set up a support booth at the handball court at Victoria Park, where a professional team of Chinese medicine practitioners and students from the School of Chinese Medicine offered onsite physical assessments and post-race recovery advice to safeguard runners’ well-being.
