Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held a naming ceremony today (4 May) to name the Academic and Administration Building as the “Dr Wu Yee Sun Building,” in recognition of the generous donation from the Wu Yee Sun Charitable Foundation Limited (the Foundation) between 2021 and 2024. The donation supports HKBU’s clinical research initiatives in Chinese medicine. The ceremony also paid tribute to the late Dr Wu Yee Sun, founder of the Foundation and Wing Lung Bank, as well as the Wu family for their longstanding support of the University.
Officiating at the naming ceremony were Mr Norman Wu, former Director of the Foundation; Mr Arthur Wu, Mr Samuel Wu and Ms Jenny Ma, current Directors of the Foundation; Ms Jini Ip and Ms Leanna Wong, members of the Wu family; Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation; and Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. They also hosted the ribbon-cutting event, marking a new chapter for the building. Following the ceremony, the guests toured a range of the building’s unique facilities.
Located on Baptist University Road Campus, the 13-storey Dr Wu Yee Sun Building provides the University with flexible teaching and administrative spaces. It has a total floor area of 32,730 square metres and serves over 6,000 staff and students daily. Designed with the concept of “Liberating Creativity”, the Dr Wu Yee Sun Building features a distinctive façade with several “boxes” extending from the main structure. This design symbolises the breaking of boundaries, the inspiration of innovation extending beyond campus, and engagement with the community, reflecting HKBU’s commitment to academic freedom and innovation.
Opened in the 2012/13 academic year, the building houses a variety of special facilities such as a multi-purpose auditorium, an outdoor recreation platform, the Learning Commons, and a rooftop garden, fostering an excellent environment for teaching, learning and interactive exchange. In 2015, the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors awarded the building in the category of New Building Works – Client’s Representative in the Building Surveyors Awards for its outstanding planning, design, and construction.
Other distinguished guests in attendance from HKBU included Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School; Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Zhang Han, Dean of the School of Business; Professor Li Min, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.
The Wu Yee Sun Charitable Foundation and the Wu family have been steadfast supporters of HKBU, contributing significantly to the advancement of Chinese medicine, the enhancement of campus facilities, and the University’s strategic development. Their generosity is also reflected in their support for the establishment of the Wing Lung Bank Building for Business Studies on Shaw Campus and the Man Lung Garden at Ho Sin Hang Campus.
