Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Youth of Guangzhou and Hong Kong Association (YGH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) yesterday (4 May), which is designated as the Youth Day in China. The signing of the MOU on this special occasion signifies both parties’ dedication to support youth development in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, and contribute continuously to the prosperity and development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Nation.

The MOU was signed by Professor Amy Lee, Director of Student Affairs of HKBU, and Mr Kai-man Fok, President of YGH. The signing was witnessed by Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU; Ms Wendy Cheung, Deputy Director of Student Affairs of HKBU; Mr Leon Lin, Chairman of YGH; and Mr Anthony Chan Yin-chung, Vice-President and Supervisor of Internship Committee of YGH.

In his welcoming address, Dr Albert Chau noted that, to prepare students to shape the future, HKBU firmly believes that students must be able to integrate knowledge from different academic disciplines and work across different cultures and sectors. “This is the essence of the transdisciplinary education we have been advocating over the past few years.  Through this partnership, we will seek additional opportunities for our students to work and learn in Guangzhou and the Greater Bay Area. Building connections between youth in Guangzhou and Hong Kong and giving them exposure, opportunities for collaboration, and a deeper understanding of our own culture and our mother country’s development, will be an excellent way to foster our students’ national pride and identity," said Dr Chau.

In his speech, Mr Leon Lin said YGH is committed to providing Hong Kong youth with development opportunities in the GBA. It continues to promote diverse exchange activities and projects to guide Hong Kong youth to experience and broaden their horizons, enhancing their sense of belonging and identity with the Nation. “HKBU upholds the essential principle of whole person education and is committed to cultivating diverse talents who contribute to society. This complements YGH’s mission in providing GBA development opportunities and broadening the horizons of the youth,” he added.

Mr Kenneth Leung, Vice-Chairman of the Youth Development Commission of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said at the ceremony: “The MOU marks the establishment of partnership between the two parties, and symbolises a solid and important step forward in promoting youth development in Hong Kong and the deepening of industry-academia collaboration.” He stated that the MOU can serve as an important bridge for young people to explore diverse development paths, as well as a vital platform to promote the deep integration of industry, academia, research and application, and to cultivate national identity and international perspective.

Under the MOU, HKBU and YGH will explore cooperation opportunities on different aspects of student development. Related initiatives include sharing industry insights with students through business forums, seminars, lectures, workshops, mentoring activities, company visits, as well as insightful exchanges on industry and market trends. The offering of career and learning opportunities to students, such as local and regional internships, graduate jobs, practicums, and learning excursions, will also be explored.

Both parties may also pursue other mutually agreed activities, such as mentorships, collaborative surveys and research projects.
