Wednesday, 1 July 2026

To celebrate the 29th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China, Dr Kennedy Y H Wong, Chairman of the Council and the Court of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), led members of the HKBU community, including Professor Alex Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor, Council and Court members, as well as senior management team members, faculty, staff, alumni and students, in attending a flag-raising ceremony on campus this morning (1 July).

In his address, Dr Wong remarked that the nation is currently in the inaugural year of its “15th Five-Year Plan” and is actively pursuing a new phase of modernisation with Chinese characteristics. The HKSAR Government is also fully dedicated to preparing Hong Kong’s first Five-Year Plan in order to embrace the significant opportunities brought by the “15th Five-Year Plan”. He stated that, as a university in the HKSAR supported by the nation and being closely connected to the world, HKBU has been committed to nurturing talents with an affection for and a sense of belonging to the country, while also fostering an international perspective, the ability to innovate, and transdisciplinary knowledge. He called on all members to fully support the development needs of the nation and the HKSAR, to embrace and fulfil the new positioning, new functions, and new tasks entrusted to us by the nation, and to proactively integrate into and serve the country’s overall development, while promoting high-quality economic development and improving people’s livelihoods.

In 2022, HKBU established the HKBU Student Flag-raising Team, which was formed by a group of enthusiastic student volunteers dedicated to supporting and promoting national education. The team shoulders the solemn task of raising the national flag at the university. HKBU first-year student Shi Tian, who participated in the ceremony today, said that he joined the Student Flag-raising Team after enrolling at HKBU last year, having been deeply moved and inspired when he witnessed the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square in Beijing as a child. He also hopes to carry on this honourable and solemn mission on campus, and connect with like-minded peers.

Shi said, “Every mission undertaken by the Flag-raising Team is an important moment that deepens our emotional bond with the motherland. Through repeated training and practice, I have gained a deeper understanding of the significance of the national flag and the protocol of the flag-raising ceremony." Shi had participated in a study tour to Beijing earlier, during which he visited the National Museum of China. This deepened his understanding of the history of the national flag and encouraged him to further enrich his relevant knowledge and skills with a heightened sense of duty, so that he can continue to fulfil this solemn responsibility.
