Mr Tung Chee-hwa, former Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and former Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), passed away yesterday (8 September). The entire HKBU community is deeply saddened by his passing and extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Tung’s family.
As the first Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr Tung Chee-hwa fulfilled the historic mission of leading Hong Kong’s return to the motherland and laid a lasting foundation for the city’s economic prosperity and social stability. Throughout his life, Mr Tung contributed to the nation with his remarkable vision, wisdom and unwavering patriotism, serving as a role model for all.
In 1999, Mr Tung visited HKBU in person to officiate at the foundation stone laying ceremony for the Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building, supporting the University’s advancement in Chinese medicine education and talent development. He also toured campus facilities and showed genuine concern for the growth of the University, from which faculty and students benefited greatly from his insight and guidance. The HKBU community will continue to honour Mr Tung’s spirit of selfless dedication, and strive to carry on his legacy of serving HKSAR and contributing to the nation.
