Honorary University Fellow (2015)

A graduate of our distinguished institution, Mr Herman T W Lau received his Diploma in Sociology from the Hong Kong Baptist College in 1975. Building on his interests and commitments to community and church services, Mr Lau worked as a social worker upon his graduation. With his strong business acumen and passion in electronics, Mr Lau ventured into the electronics business in 1980 during which he has established Daiwa Associate Group of Companies and grew multifold annually. He is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors and President of Daiwa Associate Holdings Limited. Under his visionary leadership, the company has been listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 1994 with a market cap of over $1 billion. His career achievements in the electronics sector are extraordinary.

As an ardent and loyal supporter of his alma mater, Mr Lau has been a steadfast supporter of HKBU. He frequently participates in University activities and has been invited many times to speak in career talks to share with students his valuable personal experiences. Mr Lau highly values these opportunities to interact with our students. For his expertise in business and entrepreneurship, Mr Lau has been invited to offer his insightful advice on the University’s development on various fronts. He was Chairman of the Department of Sociology Advisory Committee from 2003 to 2010 and he has been serving as Member of the University’s Advisory Committee on Graduate Employment since 2005.

Mr Lau’s enthusiastic support for his alma mater has also resulted in his being a major donor to University causes and initiatives. Over the years, Mr Lau has made generous donations to the University. He is currently the Honorary President of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation.

Committed to contributing to the education of the next generation, Mr Lau has served on the school management committee of various primary and secondary schools. With his strong business sense and commitment to education, Mr. Lau is proud to have contributed to the development of youngsters. He recalled that as guest at a graduation ceremony, he was highly impressed by the English drama put on by students at a primary school. He encouraged and assisted the school management to build on its strength on the English language and he has since successfully turned around the school from one with limited enrolment to one that was highly sort after by parents and students alike.

As a family man, Mr Lau enjoys his family life and he highly values the fun and good cheers he shares with his family. His three lovely daughters, his son, and grandchild spend every Boxing Day with him in Hong Kong in spite of their respective schedules. The entire family also takes one to two trips together every year. Dedicated to serving God, Mr Lau also takes time out of his busy schedule to serve as Chairman of the Board of Deacons of the CCC Leung Faat Memorial Church. He has also been the Chairman of the Church Board.

As a key enabler in multiple areas, Mr Herman T W Lau exemplifies whole person education. He is a pillar of our University and of Hong Kong society at large.
