HKBU hosted the Employers’ Luncheon 2015 today (21 January) to boost the University’s links with the industrial and corporate world and to provide an opportunity for graduating students to meet with employers from all sectors. Close to 540 persons attended the luncheon, including guests, students and staff.
The University invited The Honourable Andrew Liao Cheung-sing, Senior Counsel, to deliver a keynote speech on “The main engine for future economic development – How can youngsters in Hong Kong capitalise on the opportunities?”
Mr Liao said the unemployment rate for young people was high due to the low level of education and skills as well as a lack of job variety. He said that in order to seize the opportunities, students had to pursue three elements: Capacity, Attitude and Planning. Regarding capacity, Mr Liao encouraged students to participate in internship programmes, build up a diverse skill set and peer-to-peer network, continue their education and training, and embrace lifelong learning so as to develop strengths. In addition, students should have a positive work and life attitude, global vision and embrace future change. He added that students should be aware of their strengths and what the job market demands, and try to seek opportunities in different areas. “I encourage you to put on your CAP for a successful future that builds on your strengths and always embrace change,” concluded Mr Liao.
In his speech, Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, said HKBU has long believed that bringing the University and Industry together to enable a synergy of the two communities was of paramount importance.Apart from undertaking projects to transfer knowledge to industry partners, the University has a variety of activities that engage stakeholders, with the Employers’ Luncheon being one of the highlights on its calendar.
Professor Chan added that the University not only equipped the students with professional knowledge but also nurtured them to be creative thinkers, problem-solvers, team players and socially responsible members of the community with an international outlook. “The wonderful feedback we have received from employers about our graduates stands as an affirmation of our quality teaching and learning,” he said.
Guests who attended the luncheon are mainly senior executives from local firms and international corporations in various sectors, including banking, accountancy, information technology, education, social welfare, tourism, media and advertising.
