The staff and students of the Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) of HKBU participated in the “Just-tifying Touch: ‘Flying with Art’ Inclusion Programme” co-organised by AVA and Hong Kong Society for Education in Art. Under the Programme, five student artists went to three local special needs schools to teach the students to create.
Around 20 pieces of artwork produced by students with special educational needs (SEN) were showcased in an exhibition at the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in early March. The AVA students had helped in the design of teaching materials with the teachers of special needs schools before the artists conducted training.
Dr Victor Lai, Associate Professor of AVA, said that SEN students tend to have a strong artistic sense and creative abilities. He said, “Their products illustrate that under proper guidance, SEN students could produce creative work, just like their non-SEN peers.” Dr Lai hopes that this knowledge transfer programme can help society better understand SEN students.
The programme was supported by the Knowledge Transfer Office of HKBU and Arts in Heritage Research Ltd.
