HKBU has received a total of HK$1.33 million in donations from Mr Poon Kei-chak and Mrs Miraner Poon, of which HK$1 million will be used to support Chinese medicine research, while HK$330,000 will be designated for the Mr & Mrs Poon Kei Chak Bursaries.

In appreciation of Mr and Mrs Poon’s beneficence, a cheque presentation ceremony was held on 16 May. Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Poon Kei-chak, Mrs Miraner Poon, Mr Abraham Poon,  and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Other HKBU representatives attending the ceremony included Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning); Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

At the ceremony, Professor Wai expressed his deep gratitude to Mr and Mrs Poon for their unswerving support of HKBU. He said: “The donation will enable the University to conduct quality Chinese medicine research, thereby promoting the modernisation and internationalisation of Chinese medicine. Mr and Mrs Poon’s steadfast support to the students and in setting up bursaries is highly appreciated. The bursaries not only support students in need, but they are also a meaningful gift to mark the 33rd wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Poon.”

Mr Poon Kei-chak said: “We are delighted that the Government has entrusted HKBU with the operation of Hong Kong’s first Chinese Medicine Hospital, which is a recognition of the University’s leading role in the development of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong. We support HKBU in its efforts to advance Chinese medicine research as it will definitely benefit the entire Hong Kong community, and we hope the bursaries can assist students with financial difficulties.”

Mr and Mrs Poon are long-standing supporters of HKBU. Since 2001, they have made multiple generous donations to HKBU for various development projects and initiatives, including the University Foundation Fund, the School of Chinese Medicine Development Fund and student activities.
