HKBU receives donation from Chan Shu Yin Foundation to support long COVID research

HKBU has recently received a generous donation of HK$1 million from Chan Shu Yin Foundation Ltd. to establish the Chan Shu Yin Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Fund. The Fund will support the University’s research on post-COVID-19 conditions (known as “long COVID”). 

In appreciation of the Foundation’s beneficence, a cheque presentation ceremony was held on 20 September. Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Burton Chan Shu-yin, Chairman of Chan Shu Yin Foundation Ltd.; Mrs Angela Chan; Miss Jamie Chan; and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU.

At the ceremony, Professor Wai expressed his deep gratitude to Mr Chan for his staunch support of HKBU. He said: “Some patients who have recovered from COVID-19 are showing symptoms of long COVID. The donation will enable the University to strengthen its research and leverage the strengths of traditional Chinese medicine so as to develop better treatments or relief plans for long COVID.”

Other HKBU representatives attending the ceremony included Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of Chinese Medicine; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

Mr Chan has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the development of education in mainland China and Hong Kong. In 2000, he set up Chan Shu Yin Foundation Ltd., and it has sponsored a wide range of educational and exchange activities which have benefitted society by nurturing young talent.
