Through the seamless integration of art and technology, the “Fly Me There” exhibition, a collaboration between HKBU and the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), allows visitors to experience a virtual cultural tour at the airport, immersing themselves in more than 40 breathtaking cultural heritage sites in eight Asian countries, including China, Cambodia, India, Turkey and many others.
The exhibition is one of the deliverables of the “Future Cinema Systems: Next-Generation Art Technologies” project funded by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government. It is jointly curated and designed by Professor Jeffrey Shaw, Chair Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts and Director of the Visualization Research Centre at HKBU, and Professor Sarah Kenderdine, Professor of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland and Visiting Professor of the Department of Computer Science at HKBU. The project is carried out in partnership with Professor Richard Allen, Chair Professor of Film and Media Art of the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.
The first-of-its-kind immersive 360-degree LED cinema featured in the exhibition showcases how digital film, video games, virtual and augmented reality technologies can be fused to create an interactive mode of artistic expression. Upon entering this immersive large-scale installation and putting on 3D glasses, visitors will feel like they are exploring more than 40 cultural heritage sites, including temples, pagodas and grottoes, where the exteriors and interiors of these precious cultural heritages are instantly in front of them.
The “Fly Me There” exhibition is held at Hong Kong International Airport from 18 December 2024 to 15 February 2025. It marks the debut display of a deliverable of the “Future Cinema Systems: Next-Generation Art Technologies” project in a large public venue in Hong Kong, successfully bridging art and technology and commercialising innovative solutions for the industry.
