Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has received a generous donation of HK$2 million from Dr Stephen Riady, President of the Lippo Group, in support of the University's strategic development of Chinese medicine and its preparatory work for the operation of Hong Kong's first Chinese Medicine Hospital (CMH).

In appreciation of the donor's beneficence, a cheque presentation ceremony was held today (17 August). Officiating at the ceremony were Mr John Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Lippo China Resources Limited; Dr David Ng, Director of Lippo Asia Limited; Mr Wing Chan, Executive Vice President, Corporate Finance and Development of the Lippo Group; and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Other HKBU representatives attending the ceremony included Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine; Dr David Lai, Senior Consultant and Head of the Planning Office for the Chinese Medicine Hospital; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

At the ceremony, Professor Wai expressed his deep gratitude to Dr Mochtar Riady and Dr Stephen Riady, Honorary Chairman and President of the Lippo Group respectively, for their unswerving support of HKBU, and in particular the School of Chinese Medicine over the years. He believes that with the Lippo Group's substantial experience in healthcare business operation, its support can benefit the University's endeavours in Chinese medicine education, research and clinical services development, including its operation of the Chinese Medicine Hospital in future.

Dr Mochtar Riady and Dr Stephen Riady are longstanding supporters of HKBU. Through the Lippo Group, Dr Stephen Riady and his family have made generous donations to HKBU development projects, including the student halls of residence project and the HKBU Development Fund. In 2008, Dr Stephen Riady made a generous donation of HK$8 million in support of HKBU's institutional advancement. In recognition of his generosity, the Chinese Medicine Library located on the second floor of the Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building was named the "Dr Stephen Riady Chinese Medicine Library".

HKBU conferred the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, upon Dr Mochtar Riady in 2009, and an Honorary University Fellowship upon Dr Stephen Riady in 2006. The Lippo Group is currently an Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation.

HKBU is dedicated to providing quality Chinese medicine education and conducting cutting edge Chinese medicine research in Hong Kong. HKBU has recently succeeded in its bid to become the operator of Hong Kong's first CMH, which is to be built in Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O. The decision by the Government to bestow the important responsibility of operating Hong Kong's first CMH on HKBU is a recognition of the University's leading role in Hong Kong's Chinese medicine development.

The Lippo Group has an unrivalled network of healthcare businesses across Indonesia, Singapore, China and Japan, and HKBU will explore the feasibility of future collaborations with the Lippo Group on the University's strategic development of Chinese medicine and the preparatory work for Hong Kong's first CMH.
