Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held its 17th Honorary University Fellowship Conferment Ceremony today (23 September). Honorary University Fellowships were conferred upon three distinguished persons, namely Dr Tisa Ho Kar-kuan, Mr Edward Lui and Ms Yao Jue, in recognition of their significant contributions to society and staunch support of the University.

At the Ceremony, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, acknowledged the three Honorary University Fellowship recipients as well-respected and renowned leaders in society, and he said they have all led extraordinary lives and had decorated careers with common roots in Hong Kong. With their passion, devotion and years of hard work, they have achieved prominence in their respective fields, and their success and distinguished accomplishments are most impressive, he added.

“They deserve the honour not only because of their personal success, but also the deeds they have done to share that success. We are especially touched by how they have influenced the next generation, helped others realise their own dreams, and brought hope to society through their educational endeavours and charitable acts. They have set wonderful examples by generating possibilities and building platforms for others to rise,” said Professor Wai.

Professor Wai also said that he appreciated how the actions and achievements of the Honorary University Fellowship recipients are very much aligned with HKBU’s educational and research ethos.

“At HKBU, we prepare our students to be well-rounded leaders and caring global citizens who are ready to take on future challenges with their transdisciplinary education. We even endeavour to shape the world by reimagining creativity and innovation,” said Professor Wai. He also stated that HKBU is committed to creating a sustainable, caring and compassionate society.

Speaking on behalf of the Honorary University Fellows, Ms Yao Jue thanked HKBU for conferring Honorary University Fellowships on them, and she said they felt honoured to be receiving this special recognition as Hong Kong celebrates the 25th Anniversary of its return to the motherland. Ms Yao said she was deeply grateful that Hong Kong has broadened her horizons, and she added that she was able to realise these dreams, thanks to the experience and courage that she has gained during her time in Hong Kong.

“In recent years, I have witnessed the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s astounding development. I have felt the nation’s support in making Hong Kong an East-meets-West hub for the arts and culture. As a result of these developments, I see an open and boundless space in front of us, full of opportunities for Hong Kong’s youth to thrive. Hong Kong has the innovations that make it possible for everyone to realise their dreams. This is the charm of the city,” said Ms Yao.
