Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held the Inauguration Ceremony of Endowed Professorships 2022 on 4 August to confer Endowed Professorship titles on three distinguished scholars, and acknowledge the tremendous support received from the respective donors.

Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, presided over the Ceremony and conferred the Endowed Professorship titles on three scholars, namely Professor Gary Wong Ka-leung, Dr Mok Man Hung Endowed Professor in Chemistry; Professor Ken Yung Kin-lam, Ma Pak Leung Endowed Professor in Innovative Neuromedicine; and Professor Chan King-cheung, Raymond R Wong Endowed Professor in Media Ethics.

This year’s Endowed Professorships were established with the respective support of the various donors who contributed to the Dr Mok Man Hung Endowed Professor in Chemistry, Ma Pak Leung Company Limited and Professor Raymond R Wong. In his welcoming address, Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, expressed the University’s sincerest gratitude to the donors.

Professor Wai said: “Every endowed professorship is an enduring tribute to the donors who have established it, connecting the donors to the University in a shared vision and binding partnership. Furthermore, the additional resources brought by the endowment help to drive the development of our teaching and research programmes.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude to all donors for their generous contributions, which have been a morale-building source of encouragement as well as empowering the University to fulfil its academic aspirations and conduct cutting-edge research in different fields.”

To express its deep appreciation, the University presented a souvenir plaque to each donor, including Dr Jacinto Tong Man-leung, representative of the donors of the Dr Mok Man Hung Endowed Professor in Chemistry; Mr Mongkolchai Mavichien, representative of Ma Pak Leung Company Limited; and Professor Raymond R Wong. The three Endowed Professors were presented with certificates of appointment.

HKBU launched the Endowed Professorships Scheme in 2006 with the aim of recruiting and retaining the world’s top scholars, thereby strengthening the University’s research capacity, extending the frontiers of knowledge, and nurturing upcoming talent and leaders for society. The Scheme also provides remarkable opportunities for visionary donors to partner with the University in advancing ground-breaking research and academic excellence in their chosen disciplines for the betterment of humankind.
