Professor Guo Yike, former Vice-President (Research and Development), was elected a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences in recognition of his excellence and contributions to the field of machine learning and data-driven scientific research. A pioneer in data science, Professor Guo has developed innovative technology and systems for data analysis and machine learning.

Professor Lyu Aiping (School of Chinese Medicine) was elected a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea in 2022 in recognition of his sustained academic excellence in systems medicine. Professor Lyu is a world-leading scientist in aptamer-based translational medicine and drug discovery. His research interests focus mainly on translational research in Chinese medicine and the development of new drugs based on Chinese medicines.

Professor Cheung Yiu-ming (Department of Computer Science) was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2021 in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the field of cluster analysis and visual computing, particularly for theoretical modelling and its implementation in artificial intelligence. Among 14 newly elected Chinese Fellows, Professor Cheung was the only scientist from Hong Kong.

Professor Zhang Jianhua, Associate Vice-President (Global Research Collaboration) and Chair Professor of Biology, was named a Highly Cited Researcher 2021 by Clarivate™ for the impact and influence of his exceptional research in the field of plant and animal science. In 2021, fewer than 6,700, or about 0.1%, of the world’s researchers, earned this exclusive distinction.

Ten HKBU scholars, who received awards from a variety of funding schemes of the Research Grants Council (RGC) in 2021-22, were recognised by the RGC at a presentation ceremony on 11 November 2021 for their distinguished research achievements and significant contributions to the higher education sector. They are Dr Shi Jue (Department of Physics), Professor Clara Ho (Department of History), Dr Celine Song (Department of Journalism), Dr Hon Yu-sing (Department of Mathematics), Dr Li Xueni (Department of Marketing), Dr Chen Shu (Academy of Film), Dr Mirocha Lukasz (Academy of Visual Arts), Dr Santini Giovanni (Department of Music), Dr Tang Ling (Academy of Film) and Dr Wang Luyao (School of Chinese Medicine).

Dr Angelo Lo Conte (Academy of Visual Arts) was awarded the RSA-Samuel H. Kress Research Fellowship in Art History from the Renaissance Society of America (RSA). The award will support his research on historical documents and paintings produced by prelingually deaf artists in the period 1550-1700 in Italian cities, including Milan and Naples.

Two students, Sze Po-yee (Accounting) and Yeung Tsz-ching (Chinese Medicine), competed against nearly 33,000 candidates from across the country in the 2022 National Outstanding Youths contest. Both reached the final round of the competition, with Po-yee eventually selected as one of the 142 national outstanding youths, the only winner from Hong Kong.

Nicole Ng, a graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education and Recreation Management programme, was selected as one of the ten winners of the Outstanding Tertiary Student of Hong Kong award by the Hong Kong Youth and Tertiary Students Association. She was recognised for her outstanding extra-curricular and sporting achievements.

Ho Kin-ting, a 2020 BBA graduate from the Entrepreneurship and Finance Concentration, was honoured with the “Star in the Making” award by the Institute of Financial Technologists of Asia (IFTA) at the FinTech Achievement Awards 2020. The “Star in the Making” award recognises projects or students who have the potential to positively transform the FinTech industry. Kin-ting and two classmates formed the team FOODCHAIN with the idea of offering financing solutions to small and medium-sized enterprises, a much-needed service, especially during the pandemic.

The School of Business has been re-accredited by the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) for the maximum period of five years. The School holds accreditation from the three main accrediting bodies – EQUIS, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

Creativity recognised

Two members of the HKBU community received accolades at the 16th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards in recognition of their artistic achievements. Dr Dorothy Tse (Department of Humanities and Creative Writing) was named Artist of the Year (Literary Arts), and Ms Edith So, an alumna of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, was presented with the Award for Young Artist (Literary Arts).

Professor Lee Daw-ming (Academy of Film) (left) was winner of the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 13th Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival. His award was in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the development of documentary films in Taiwan, including aspects of production, academic research, education and promotion. His colleague, Mr Ying Liang (right), won the Eye Catcher Special Mention Award for his documentary project The More, The Merrier at the Eye Catcher International Pitching Forum 2022.

Two graduates of the Academy of Visual Arts claimed awards at the Fresh Trend Art Graduates Joint Exhibition 2021 organised by the Hong Kong Art Network. Ouyang Jiaqi won the Karin Weber Gallery Award for her sculpture “Gate With Carved Patterns”, while Ng Wing-yan’s welded metal sculpture “Slide” won the Affordable Art Fair Award.

HK4A's Students' Award_PRA HK4A's Students' Award_PRA

Three teams of students from the School of Communication won two Bronze awards and a Merit award at the HK4As Students’ Award 2021 for their creative integrated branding campaigns on “cinema”, the theme of this year’s contest. Public Relations and Advertising (PRA) students Chloe Li, Carman Hui and Karman Wong clinched the Bronze award for their campaign “Cinecation”. PRA students Helen Leung, Charlotte Wong, Steven Kwan and Eugene Wan also received a Bronze award for their pitch “4 Clouds”. Tang Jinyang and Shen Haoming of the Integrated Communication Management programme received a Merit award for their proposal “A Hours Escape Plan”.

 

Graduates of the Academy of Film (AF) have received recognition for their outstanding productions at film festivals around the world. Su Yueqin premiered her graduation work Days of Love at the world-renowned DMZ International Documentary Film Festival in South Korea. Her film was also nominated in the Shorts Competition section of the Festival. She was also invited to compete in the 8th Chongqing Youth Film Festival, and screen her work in the 1st Mǎo International Film Week on the Mainland.

Graduate Lam Yan-yue  was invited to screen her honours project And I, And I at festivals, including the Short to the Point Short Film Festival and the 17th IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival, while Chiang Kun-leong was invited by the 5th Macao International Film Festival & Awards to showcase his film Empty Sky. Ho Wing-ki was included in the official selection of the LINOLEUM Animation Festival with her work Waves. The film was also a semi-finalist at the Sweden Film Awards. Finally, Yiu Wan-yin was invited by the 17th IAWRT Asian Women’s Film Festival to screen her work Funeral

Achievements in sports

Sarah Lee (Creative and Professional Writing), a member of the Hong Kong Cycling Team, won the bronze medal in the Women’s Sprint at the Tokyo Olympic Games in August 2021. In September, Daniel Chan (Physical Education and Recreation Management), a member of the Hong Kong Para-Badminton Team, won the bronze medal at the Badminton Men’s Singles WH2 event at the Paralympic Games. Alumni Chan Chung-wang (Physical Education and Recreation Management) and Ho Yuen-kei (China Studies) also competed in the Olympics and Paralympics, respectively.

HKBU students joined a number of competitions at the 14th National Games held in Shaanxi Province. Sarah Lee (Creative and Professional Writing) won the gold medal in the final of the Women’s Sprint, and the bronze medal in the Women’s Keirin. Herry Wong (Sports and Recreation Leadership) and Tiffany Tang (Physical Education and Recreation Management) also participated in the Men’s 100 metres and the Women’s High Jump, respectively.

At the 60th Annual Athletic Meet held by The University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, the HKBU team retained the Overall Championship title, and they won a total of 12 gold medals. The HKBU Dragon Boat Team also won the championship in the post-secondary category of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Short Course Meet 2022.

Notable alumni

The University presented its 8th Distinguished Alumni Award to Professor Chan Wing-kwong (Chinese Medicine), Mr Cheng Tan-shui (School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist College), Professor Leo Poon (Biology) and Mr Patrick Tsang (Department of Accounting, Hong Kong Baptist College) in recognition of their outstanding business, professional and scholarly achievements, as well as their service and contributions to the University and society.

Professor Zheng Wanhua, a 1998 PhD graduate of the Department of Physics, was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). She is a researcher from the Institute of Semiconductors at CAS, and her research work explores the area of high-performance photonic crystal lasers. She has overseen significant breakthroughs in the field and made pioneering and systematic contributions in terms of basic principles and essential technologies.
