HKBU scholars share transdisciplinary research insights at symposium

Around a hundred academics, researchers and students attended the Symposium to explore ways to strengthen transdisciplinary research collaborations.

Around a hundred academics and students of the University attended the Annual Symposium on Transdisciplinary Research on 10 December to share their insights and explore potential opportunities in transdisciplinary research. The Symposium aimed to promote the culture of transdisciplinary research at HKBU, and showcase the latest developments and achievements in this strategic area.

 

The topics covered at the Symposium included art-tech, artificial intelligence (AI) and drug discovery, disease detection, DNA sequencing, smart city development, the data economy, and AI ethics. Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor, delivered his welcome message at the Symposium, and it was followed by opening remarks from Professor Guo Yike, Vice-President (Research and Development), and an introduction to the Symposium by Professor Johnny Poon, Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research).

 

Speakers who shared their transdisciplinary research efforts at the Symposium included Professor Ken Yung and Professor Zhao Zhongying, Professors of the Department of Biology; Professor William Cheung, Professor of the Department of Computer Science; Dr Celine Song, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism; Dr Chen Ting, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics; Dr Liu Jin, Assistant Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine; Dr Peter Nelson, Assistant Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts; and Dr Gao Meng, Assistant Professor of the Department of Geography. Following their presentations, members of the six interdisciplinary research labs shared their insights into how transdisciplinary research can flourish at the University at a roundtable discussion.
