Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has received a generous donation of HK$15 million from the Chan Hon Yin Couple Charity Trust in support of the University's clinical Chinese medicine research.

In appreciation of the donor's beneficence, a cheque presentation ceremony was held today (6 December). Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Anthony Chan, Chairman of the Chan Hon Yin Couple Charity Trust and Managing Director of the Tiger Enterprise Corporation; Mr Tommy Chan, Director of the Tiger Enterprise Corporation; Ms Donna Chan and Mr Alan Chan, Executive Directors of the Corporation; Dr Clement Chen, Chairman of the Council and the Court at HKBU; and Professor Alexander Wai, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU. Other HKBU representatives attending the ceremony included Ms Christine Chow, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary; Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development); Professor Lyu Aiping, Dean of Chinese Medicine; and Mrs Lily Chan, Director of the University Advancement Office and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

At the ceremony, Mr Anthony Chan said he and his family members have cast their vote of confidence in HKBU's preparatory work for Hong Kong's first Chinese Medicine Hospital (CMH). "We are thrilled that HKBU has been appointed as the operator of Hong Kong's first CMH by the Government, which is certainly a recognition of the University's leading role in Hong Kong's development of Chinese medicine. We wish to support HKBU in its quest to further advance Chinese medicine research, as it will benefit the whole Hong Kong community," he said.

Professor Wai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Chan Hon Yin Couple Charity Trust, especially the three generations of the Chan family for their unswerving support of the University's efforts to advance the excellence of Chinese medicine over the years.

The Chan Hon Yin Couple Charity Trust has been a staunch supporter of the HKBU School of Chinese Medicine's development for over 20 years. In 2000, it donated HK$9 million to the University to launch Hong Kong's first-ever Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) in Chinese Medicine programme. In acknowledgement of the Trust's generosity, the Chinese medicine clinic in the Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building was named the HKBU Mr. & Mrs. Chan Hon Yin Chinese Medicine Specialty Clinic and Good Clinical Practice Centre in 2001.

Since then, the Trust has continued to support several HKBU projects, including research-based initiatives and the development of various Chinese medicine projects, as well as the establishment of the Chan Hon Yin Memorial Scholarship on Chinese Medicine, the Wu Suet Fong Chinese Medicine Clinical Fellowship, and the Kan Hing Communication Scholarship. Mr Anthony Chan and the Chan Hon Yin Couple Charity Trust have been committed supporters of HKBU for many years. They have so far donated a total of more than HK$50 million in support of a variety of the University's initiatives.

Apart from the Trust's support, Mr Anthony Chan has also served as an Honorary Court member of HKBU since 2007 and a member of the Board of Governors of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation since 2009, offering wise counsel on the University's strategic development. In 2007, he was conferred an Honorary University Fellowship by HKBU in recognition of his contributions to the University and society. His son, Mr Alan Chan, is a member of the HKBU Foundation's Young Entrepreneur Committee.
